Raise a Smile Hostel Berlin: Hostel Location/Directions
Hostel Location
The hostel is located in Friedrichshain, the coolest kiez in Berlin. We are just a 5 minute walk from Simon-Dach Straße which is the famous Berlin street full of coffee shops, restaurants, bars and clubs, and just a little further from one of the few remaining sections of the Berlin wall and worlds biggest open air art gallery: The East Side Gallery.
There is a tram stop just 1 minute walk from the hostel entrance and an U-Bahn stop about 3-5 minutes walk away. The tram is the M10 which runs 24 hours a day from Warschauer strasse to Nordbahnhof stopping off at many interesting places along the way.
- Warschauer Straße - from here it is a 1 min walk to the east side gallery, which is one of the few remaining sections of the berlin wall. After the fall of the wall artist from all over the world came to Berlin to paint the wall here making the East side gallery the worlds largest open air gallery! About 5 mins on the tram or a 10 min walk
- From Warschauer Straße - Warschauer Straße is a great transport hub from here you use the S-bahn to quickly reach the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpont Charlie, Schoenefeld Airport and the U-Bahn to get to the buzzing bar scene of Kruezberg.
- Revaler straße - right in the middle of the cool bar/club/restaurant/coffee shop area of Friedrichshain, aswell as boxhagner platz with its great coffe shop culture. About 3 mins on the tram or a 5-10 min walk
- Ebeswalder straße - the area is famous in Berlin for its exciting nightlife including the Kulturbraurerai and some great restaurants and bars. About 15-20 mins on the tram.
- Mauer park - every Sunday at Mauer park there is a flohmarkt (flea market) where you can buy all kinds of unusual souvenirs, second hand clothes, bikes etc etc. There is also a large open air karaoke in an amphitheatre with about 300 people ready to sing along :) about 20 mins on the tram.
- Gedenkstatte Berliner Mauer - this is also one of the few remaining sections of the berlin wall. This however, is the only location in Berlin where you can see both the inner and outer wall, There is also a museum with a tower you can climb to look down on the death strip. It takes about 25 mins on the tram.
As you can see there is plenty to do just in the surrounding area and as we are so close to public transport we are in a fantastic location for exploring some of the the other great attractions of the massive city of Berlin, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Checkpoint Charlie.
The hostel is also in a great location for all those everyday things you might want. There is an ATM in the same building, a supermarket about 200 m away from the hostel door and an off-licence that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year about 2 minutes walk away.

Hostel Directions
The video below shows how to get to the hostel from the Bersarinplatz tram stop.
Getting to the hostel from Hauptbahnhof or Ostbahnhof (The main train stations)
Berlin is a huge city, so to get to the hostel you will need an AB public transport ticket, the ticket can be used on the S-bahn, U-bahn, trams and busses. AB tickets cost €2.30 for a single or €6.30 for a day ticket (which expires at 3AM). You can buy the ticket from the touch screen machines on the platform. Don't forget to validate your ticket (stamp it in the little box next to the ticket machine!).
So when you arrive at the train station you need to catch any of the S-bahn trains going in an Easterly direction (that means any S-Bahn going to Wartenburg, Ahrensfelde, Strausberg Nord, Erkner). Get off at Warschauer Straβe (also sometimes written as Warschauer Str.). When leaving Warschauer Straβe S-Bahn station (there is only one exit so you can't get lost!) you will see a tram track in front of you, turn right and follow the track for about 50m to the next tram stop. Catch the M10 tram to Bersarinplatz, the tram to Bersarinplatz goes in the same direction as you walked from Warschauer Straβe. When you leave the M10 at Bersarinplatz there will be a roundabout which is to the South of the tram stop, when facing the roundabout turn to your right and cross both tram tracks and the road so you are stood infront of a row of shops including a bike shop and Sparkasse Bank (with red writing). There should be a bar called 'Cafe Planet' directly in front of you in this row of shops. Walk down the passageway between cafe planet and the building next to it, there is a fluorescent green/yellow sign above the passageway. When you come out of the passageway into the courtyard turn left. Keep walking straight and our door is number 51 behind the large bike rack to the right of the green and white 'Berfin Döner' sign. Look for Raise a Smile on the buzzer!
Getting to the hostel from Berlin Schönefeld Airport
To get to the hostel from Schönefeld Airport you will need an ABC public transport ticket, the ticket can be used on the S-bahn, U-bahn, trams and busses. ABC tickets cost €3.00 for a single or €6.80 for a day ticket (which expires at 3AM). You can buy the ticket from the touch screen machines next to the stairs that lead up to the platform. Don't forget to validate your ticket before you get on the S-Bahn train (stamp it in the little box on the platform!).
Catch the S9 train to Ostkreuz, Schönefeld is the last station on the line so it's impossible to get on an S9 train going in the wrong direction! You will have to change at Ostkreuz and get on any S-bahn going West (that means any of the S-Bahn trains going to Spandau, Potsdam or Westkreuz). Get off at Warschauer Straβe (it's only one station from Ostkreuz). When leaving Warschauer Straβe S-Bahn station (there is only one exit so you can't get lost!) you will see a tram track in front of you, turn right and follow the track for about 50m to the next tram stop.
